Q: Unum has offered me a buyout of $38,000. I have 10 more years to draw $600/yr, so this seems to be a low offer to me. Can they offer more or is this what I would be only entitled to? Is the life insurance I have with them cancelled if I accept the buyout?
A: You should have any long-term disability insurance company buyout offer evaluated by an experienced long-term disability insurance attorney. Unum often requires attorney review and will pay your attorney's fee. The determination of whether or not the buyout amount is appropriate depends on the facts of each case. Our experience with Unum is that there is always some negotiation room but not much. The life insurance will not necessarily be cancelled. This should be a part of the negotiation.
