The following tactics are unethical, and we always advise people to be extremely careful with hiring a personal injury attorney. After all, it could be a relationship that lasts years and is a life-changing decision.

Here are tricks that may be used by unethical personal injury attorneys in Haymarket or Gainesville, VA:

• They should never call you first. If an attorney calls you unsolicited, then run away from him or her.
• Rushing to sign you to contingent fee contract. If a personal injury attorney is pushy about getting you to sign a contingent fee agreement, be cautious. This particular fee arrangement may not be the best for your case. You should always be given the opportunity to take the agreement home with you to review it. (Our office has even heard of attorneys sending couriers to the injured party's home within hours of the first contact, without them even meeting face to face first! That's crazy!)
• Watch out for doctor referrals. We refer to this circumstance as the "Kiss of Death" for a personal injury case. If your Haymarket or Gainesville attorney has a stack of cards for area doctors and chiropractors and insists on you seeing the person they recommend, head for the door. (Sometimes attorneys will have good recommendations for specialists to see, since they deal with those doctors more often than your average person, but be wary of stacks of business cards from medical professionals.)
• Unsolicited mailings. Some attorneys will send you something in writing soliciting your claim through a "cold" mailing. The only reason an attorney should be sending you such a mailing is with free information you can study on your own time. Never accept such a solicitation of your case.
• Turn away "runners." This practice is not only unethical, but also illegal in some parts of the country. A "runner" is typically someone who hangs around at the police station or listens to a police radio to get to the accident scene or the hospital immediately after an accident to sign up the injured party with an attorney. This is beyond a dirty practice; it is downright shameful. Never get caught up with an attorney who uses runners.
