It’s easy to think that just because you have car insurance and a great insurance agent that you’re covered. Why wouldn’t you be, right? It’s not like your agent would ever “forget” to tell you about a better coverage that could cost you next to nothing. Unfortunately as a Virginia personal injury attorney I see a lot of my clients that are not only victims of a car wreck, but also by an insurance agent that didn’t sell them the most ideal coverage. I’ll share a story with you about one of my clients that will make more sense.
Anita and her husband were hit in a very bad car wreck where another driver was even killed. This was a very rough time for her, and her husband as well who is still recovering to this day.
Sure, accidents happen – but are you covered if the driver at fault isn’t insured?
Unfortunately, you may not be. The good news is that uninsured and underinsured motorist’s coverage exists, but the bad news is your insurance agent probably didn’t recommend you get the right amount.
What’s so unfortunate in Anita’s case is that she was hit by an illegal immigrant who was drunk behind the wheel. She was left with extremely high medical bills, as her insurance didn’t cover this.
You may be a bit confused, but it’s really quite simple. Since the other driver had zero insurance, the best way to maximize your protection of paying out of pocket after an accident is to have what’s called “uninsured and underinsured coverage”. This will most likely cover the remainder of expenses you probably have.
What’s even better about this is that you could bump your liability coverage along with your uninsured and underinsured coverage up to $1,000,000 in coverage for as little as $50 per year. This could be the difference between collecting damages, or paying your own medical bills.
