Tips on how to find the right medical malpractice attorney for your case

You’ve been a victim, and it was clearly medical malpractice. The doctor who committed medical negligence isn’t going to refer you to a great medical malpractice attorney, so what do you do?

You need to handle this asap, but don’t trust all the silly lawyer advertisements you see on billboards and in the Yellowpages. I can’t blame you. There was a lawyer recently that used a billboard with the headline “I’m a lawyer on a billboard. So you should call me.” As comical as this is, it doesn’t really leave you with much more knowledge about medical malpractice attorneys than before you drove by his ad.

The worst part is, a lot of these “awesome” lawyers who have their big faces all over the media aren’t actually a good fit for you. Many of them have never even successfully tried a malpractice case in front of a jury.

Medical malpractice cases are difficult enough to win as it is, and finding the best medical malpractice attorney isn’t much easier.

So how exactly do you choose the best medical malpractice attorney to fight for you? Well, I’m going to share with you the secrets to this, but be warned: you will have to invest the time into it. Why wouldn’t you though, it is for you to win against a doctor who committed medical negligence so why not go with the best?

1) Don’t stop with your city or county. Here in Virginia you may have to search as far as outside of DC in Northern Virginia to find the best medical malpractice attorney. If you live somewhere in southern or western Virginia it may seem like a stretch, but if the case has the value it might just be worth it.

2) Check out their verdicts and settlements. This won’t determine your turnout, but if there’s a lack of cases or none at all it may be a red flag to steer clear.

3) Referrals can work. Not always, but it never hurts to ask.

4) Danger! Lawyer directories can be misleading. This is usually a handful of lawyers throwing money at advertising with no real evidence of quality.

5) The Yellow Pages. You’ll find a ton of potential lawyers, but make sure that you only pursue those that are selective. If there’s a lawyer bending over backwards just to get you in the door, odds are he’s starving for clients – and there’s probably a great reason why!

6) Give the local Bar Association a shot. They’ll give you a random name of someone who paid to be in their rotational drawing for a particular type of lawyer. This has nothing to do with how good of a lawyer they are.

7) Interview several attorneys. Also, when you are in the interview ask for names of a few other attorneys. If they won’t have the decency to share this with you, they probably don’t have much to compete on with them. This lawyer is probably a no go.

8) Get their book. Every good lawyer has a book that they should be able to send your way. This will help you sort the bad apples out of the bunch

9) Ignore the ads. You’ll see every lawyer use the same ad “we care for you” or “we will fight for you.” Well, that’s what every lawyer should do for you, if you are their client. This is useless, and won’t help you in your search for a qualified attorney.

10) We have to be honest with ourselves and realize that not every medical malpractice attorney will have these qualifications. Regardless, this should be something to make your judgment on if one or more are lacking.
