Reston Personal Injury Lawyer Talks Motorcycle Safety

Every Reston personal injury lawyer should know know about motorcycle safety. For one, we know that wearing a helmet can help prevent death and serious injuries. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) believes that motorcycle helmets lower the chances of a fatal car wreck by 37 percent. Just last week, a motorcycle rider was killed in a New York anti-helmet rally after he lost control of his bike, went over the handlebars and hit his head on the pavement.

In Virginia, wearing a helmet is mandatory, as our state is one of the twenty in the country that has a motorcycle helmet law in place. Whether you support or oppose this law, if you are caught riding a motorcycle without a helmet, expect to be punished.

Can Antilock Brakes Prevent Reston Motorcycle Accidents?

Helmets are not the only safety devices that are believed to reduce deaths. Antilock brakes are also viewed as an important safety feature on motorcycles. Antilock brake systems utilize electronic sensors and software to identify when a motorcycle’s wheels are about to lock up. When this situation is detected, the system will kick in by rapidly releasing and reapplying braking pressure to give the motorcyclist the opportunity to slow down while the wheels continue to turn.

According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, “Antilock brakes Aren’t Just for Four Wheels,” federal safety officials are putting pressure on manufacturers to include antilock brakes on more models, lowering the chances of a car wreck. While further studies are being conducted into the effectiveness of antilock brakes on motorcycles, we do know one thing – antilock brakes can help a rider stay upright during a hard stop. As proven by many past motorcycle accidents, staying upright is often the key to preventing serious injuries, even death.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety conducted a study last year that showed that motorcycles equipped with antilock brakes were 37 percent less likely to be involved in fatal accidents than those without them.
