The Virginia Board of Medicine (VBM) finally got around to revoking the license of Dr. Rolando M. Chavez of Richlands, VA. Dr. Chavez, a urologist at the Southwest Virginia Medical Center, retired from practicing in 2008 so the revocation may be moot but at least the VBM is sending a warning to doctors.
The revocation stems from Chavez's treatment of a 75-year-old male who had a history of prostate cancer for which he received radiation treatment. The patient first reported to Dr. Chavez in October 2004 at which point he complained of hematuria (blood in his urine) and irritative voiding symptoms (discomfort during urination). Dr. Chavez saw the patient thirteen times over two years while he continued to complain of the same symptoms. Dr. Chavez NEVER ordered appropriate testing to determine WHY the patient was urinating blood. Seems like a good first step. Instead the patient got the recommended testing over two years later...
And the results were not good. The anonymous patient was diagnosed with a highly aggressive form of bladder cancer known as "high-grade muscle-invasive urothelial carcinoma." Had Dr. Chavez performed the appropriate tests when the patient first complained perhaps his prognosis would be much better.
