Not Everyone is Doing What it Takes to Avoid a Virginia Car Accident Death
Seat belts are known to save lives. One simple action of clicking that belt can make all the difference in a Virginia car accident. A lot of Virginia car accident fatalities could be prevented by the simply making it a habit to buckle up.
While seat belt usage can always improve, we have made leaps and bounds over the years. An article that appeared in the Weekend Herald on December 3, 1979 reported that seat belt usage was at 14 percent and was actually declining. Wow, we have come a long way!
One Simple Device Can Avoid a Virginia Car Accident Fatality
When you read news stories of people who survive horrific car accidents, it is usually mentioned that they were wearing seat belts. Take a recent car crash as an example. The Virginian Pilot reported that a businessman was killed in a collision when he was thrown from the vehicle. According to the news, he was not wearing a seat belt. His daughter, who was also in the car, was wearing her seat belt and avoided serious injury.
The good news is that many people are aware of the importance of seat belts and are making the conscious decision to buckle up. Simply take a look at some of the recent statistics regarding seat belt usage in Virginia:
In nearly 55 percent of fatalities, no safety restraint was used.
Not surprisingly, more people were killed when not wearing a seat belt than when they were wearing one.
Among un-restrained 16 to 18 year olds who were either injured or killed while in the backseat, the hospital costs and lengths of time spent in the hospital were significantly higher than those who were wearing seat belts.
This information can be found in the “2010 Virginia Traffic Crash Facts” report released by the Virginia Highway Safety Office.
